I received a Psychotherapy & Counseling magazine in the mail, but I don’t recall ever subscribing to this one! Has this ever happened to anyone else? There is a free online version of the magazine that can be found on their website here. The online magazine includes prices and direct links to the books and resources on their website. It even includes a promo code to save on the content listed.

After taking a closer look, there are several books found in here I would recommend! Here is the list of books recommended, including direct links to buy them on their website. Looking into price comparisons, it looks like sometimes the Rowman website is cheaper while at other times Amazon is cheaper. Even if they are the same price, Rowman gives the 30% discount with the promo code. Definitely be sure to look at which option is the best price before ordering!
There are some interesting finds in this list. For example one book involves making mandated treatment work, which some community health workers can relate to too well. A book on Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder discusses how these individuals can use the power of their driven personality. Another book discusses ruptured mother-daughter relationships which is a fresh break from the saturation of father-daughter relational books. Other interesting finds include music therapy, creative play DBT with children and adolescents, and polayam relationships in elders. A much needed book for providers working with LGBTQ+ youth can be found from a local Minnesotan, Nic Rider. It appears that several of the books listed here include current social issues which can be thought-provoking and informal for our work.
I know for myself I have already added some of these books to my own wish list! One being the The Encyclopedia of Parapsychology, the study of psychic phenomena and other paranormal claims. I remember as a child, before I knew I wanted to be a mental health therapist, I had the idea of becoming a parapsychologist. The other book I thought was imperative was Getting Real about Sex Addiction, which as a sex therapist, “sex addiction” is a debated term in the mental health field. I’m interested in how they provide information for treatment of out of control sexual behaviors. I’m also really interested Self-Supervision which helps mental health providers manage their role through self-exploration in hopes to decrease any transference or countertransference with clients. My full wish list can be found here.
